Re: Drug Problem in our area?

Who would leave a script of Xanax out where someone could carry it off? They aren't easy to replace, I would much rather spend the cash that is spent on the "gimmie " ,programs, on making sure that it goes where it is needed. It could be, that some of the "sports fools" on this forum , know that if you get the kids involved in some kind of ball, they don't have time for "being high". What is a kid worth? I have my values and others have theirs.

I really dont take sports makes much of a difference on whether or not kids experiment with drugs. I think it really just comes down to the individual.

Try leaving a kid out and he will find SOMETHING to do - it ain't the trying drugs that is killing them. It is the habit that forms from not having ANYTHING else to do , that is the reason I talk about the 5 schools and the 50 kids left out of the basketball programs in Lee County after the schools consolidated. These are kinda the "leaders" , some will always follow.

The hair test is simple. You simple get a sample of a person's hair and test it. Use to be able to buy the testing kits at your pharmacy.
And with the money Magic has. Well he can afford the treatments others cannot.
You don't hear about the good cases. You hear about those who die from the things we are talking about.
I don't care how good of kids you raise or think you raise. There will be a moment when that moment of truth is tried.
For many that is the moment that they realize if their kid can resist the peer pressure.
Think back to your own days and days now. See what has changed and what is different.
And today. You don't have to try it. Just dont' fit in or have a few enemies. They may make you high or let you try something, and you may not know it until your told at the er.
Ever heard of spikin? It happens more than most know. And is very popular at the teen level. Sometimes you don't even have to be a user of anything to well get to try it.

Some of you younger ones. You have no idea how you will react until it is your child. That is just the truth. When that child comes into this world. You will do all you think you can do and all that is right. You will teach them all you can.
But how will you handle that first time they fail to do what you said or things happen. I mean just happens. You know im sorry mom or dad i know i messed up. How do you handle it? Got an idea yet?
Or they do what you say and you get that call at 12 midnight to come pick them up. And the first time you well, take care of it and discipline them. What happens the second time?
See that is when reality kicks in and the things were talking about become reality.
And what about the best friend they like. But you know they have a habit. A lot to consider being a parent. But hey you was the perfect parent. Your kids could always come to you and talk to you no matter what. It was who's fault? Oh their best friends, it had to be them. I knew they were no good. I kept a strict eye on them all the time, yet what happened. Hmm.
Not cut and dry and no books. And the one's out there. Well their written mostly by those who never faced any real challenges.
    Think about it.
As far as a problem. We got a real one here in SWVA. And one problem is parents refuse to accept it. And most don't even talk to their kids about it. One reason most don't want to know. Yet they already do. And they don't know hot to deal with it, and many are afraid to confront their kids because their afraid, the kid may hate them. So when do they hate you, before or after you bury them or send them to rehab, or the year after you let go and say i wish i had not had to bury my child, or the why didn't i see this was this far out of hand. That is the sad facts. And yeah that's reality. Not as easy as it seems being a parent is it. No big book to go to. And no matter how your mom and dad raised you, that don't mean squat today. It's called generational gaps. You learn you live and hopefully you do enough to make a difference.

I really think we are on the same page here, just have different ideas. It is just hard in this small of an area, with limited number of resources and limited number of volunteers. Are you advocating in opposition of consolidation? Because if so, you make a great point especially in this area, and eastern KY. Since like 98 or 99 this region has gained nation wide notoritety from drug use, especially oxycontin and meth. I have known several people who have taken a recreational passtime to the extreme and I really worry about them. I had a friend who really got messed up on "crank" and even talking to him today you can tell he is still not all there.

[/ QUOTE ] If you do the consolidation with an attitude of helping everyone, I won't be against it. The issue is , for me anyway, what are we gonna do for the kids? All of them aren't going to college, the truth is some will never finish high school. But if you can get them into adulthood without an addiction, then at least they have a chance. If you doubt what I'm saying(and this isn't aimed at Moonlight) find a methodone clinic , park down the road and see the traffic . See if anyone looks like they have ANY choice in what they do, cause a true addict DOESN'T. Drugs and the suppliers own their soul, lie ,cheat and steal, anything for the next high. The small schools do have more slots for sports, but the schools are getting old. New ones are needed, not patched up , built onto , still old schools. Then maybe Wise County would need to face the fact that the kids are gonna want something to DO. We tell'em not to go to Wal-Mart and not to drive thru town, other than a couple of movies and getting out and on the back roads , what is left? Appy found 50,000 to spend on a railroad depot, or so I thought at one point, but other than the coaches and the volunteers and parents, what about the kids? The civil war was bad, many came home morphine heads, so the government found something to help them "kick the habit" - heroin, and to solve that addiction, methodone. My what an interesting chain of events.

I can remember when I was in highschool the guys who ran that kicked kids out if they were not bowling?

When I was like 16 that place used to be packed every friday and saturday and then they just flat out said kids couldnt hang out there, you know that had to hurt some of their profit. Same thing for "cruising walmart", they started givin kids tickets just for driving around walmart. to me it seems law enforcement waste too much time and energy on garbage like that.

You bring up a good point there MG. Where can the kids go today to have fun.
I don't know if there is any statistic. But i would of like to of seen some of the things from years back compared to today.
Drugs use, crimes, etc. See what kind of changes took place then and now. Might find something in there useful as far as trends.

Re: Drug Problem in our area?

I'm complained about the lack of places to go for years in Clintwood guys and gals.

When I made a habit of going out cruising around, it was to see people, be seen. Sure on a good night, maybe even talk to someone, and hope that it lead to a date or something down the line. Mostly it was just out and being social. Was there times that someone might slip them a drink somewhere, of course. However, there wasn't any craziness. Many a day, we would have police pull in and talk with us where we parked, we didn't care, it wasn't any ill intent on our part, just kids out being around other kids. I had one local police tell me that he would rather a kid be sitting in a vehicle drunk right there in a lot in town, where at least they could kind of keep an eye on them, than the alternative, which is them out on backroads drunk.

Let's not be naive, you're always going to have some who are going to party. You're always going to have some who aren't going to party. You're always going to have some who party way to much. That's just the way it is.

The problems are when you run kids off from being out town, in front of everybody, you give kids 2 options, 1)find somewhere to go, or 2)kids stay home. Now not many kids are going to just give up and stay home. They'll find someone who has a place, who's parents are out, who has parents a bit more 'easy on the rules' etc. So if you eliminate the places that the majority of your kids can go, you end up leaving them basically one option, even if they aren't a party kid, when there is limited places for them to go and hang and avoid the parties, eventually the only way they get to be around other kids is go to the parties.

I can say this from some experience, I wasn't a big partier. I was more than happy to find a good parking lot, sit on the back of a truck or in a car and just hang out, see who could see, maybe pull in talk to someone etc. When there became no real options on that, nothing else to do, it was either stay home or end up finding other places to go, peoples house to go hang out and such.

Now does going to a party or such make someone have to get wild? Nope, it doesn't but if you keep putting someone in that environment, most will give in over time. You'll always have a few that can say no, or don't want to risk it, but you lose a lot more to the wild side or the party side by totally thinking you're cleaning things up, than you ever would by giving an inch or two.

What we've got here is failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach, so you get what we had here last week which is the way he wants it. Well, he gets it.
